Former East Fremantle player Garrick Ibbotson (Fremantle Football Club) is the Round Nine NAB AFL Rising Star nominee.
The midfielder was Fremantle’s best against Carlton on Saturday in Melbourne, creating play from defence and taking some crucial marks in the final quarter. Garrick’s opponents included Eddie Betts, Darren Pfeiffer and Jordan Russell.
It was the 20-year-old’s seventh AFL match since debuting in Round 11 last year. This season he is averaging 19 disposals a match.
Garrick was Fremantle’s second selection (26th overall) in the 2005 NAB AFL Draft.
In 2005 he played Under 18 football with the East Fremantle Colts, represented Western Australia at the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships and was named in the WAFL Colts Team of Year. After being drafted he continued his development in the East Fremantle reserves finishing second in the 2006 best and fairest.
Garrick didn’t play football until he was 13. A keen water polo and soccer player, he played his first Australian football match when asked by friends to make up the numbers for Bullcreek Leeming Junior Football Club.
Fremantle Coach Mark Harvey said Garrick's nomination was recognition for his impressive form and solid contribution in six games so far this season.
"Garrick is a hard-working and talented player who, along with several other of our younger blokes, will form the backbone of Fremantle's future," he said.
Garrick's nomination follows Rhys Palmer's nomination earlier in the season and is a big positive for the East Fremantle Football Club. This is also the second nomination in 2008 of a player who played his junior football at Bullcreek Leeming Junior Football Club. This is a tremendous recognition of all the hard work that coaches and volunteers at the junior club have put in at developing young players. Congratulations are extended to all involved.
Following each round of the home and away season, a panel of judges will select a NAB AFL Rising Star nominee. At the completion of the season, one of these nominees will be chosen as the 2008 NAB AFL Rising Star.
NAB will once again recognise the junior clubs that helped foster the early careers of the nominated players. NAB will present each of the 22 clubs with a NAB Club Recognition Award, a package of practical and financial resources designed to assist them in developing future champions.
Congratulations to Garrick on this achievement and also to the Bullcreek Leeming Junior Football Club.
