The Sharks will look to build on their first win of the season when they take on Claremont in Geraldton as part of the country sport enrichment scheme this Saturday.
Geraldton has provided a rich source of talent for East Fremantle over the years producing AFL players such as Brad Dick, Tarkyn Lockyer, Patrick Ryder, Harry Taylor, Paul Hasleby and Josh Kennedy.
Currently there are five regular league players, three reserves players, four colts players and six under-16-development squad players all sourced from Geraldton.
Captain Kasey Green (pictured) and vice captain Leith Teakle are both key members of the current Shark’s side who originated in Geraldton.
Teakle came to East Fremantle as a 17-year-old but his family are still based in Geraldton and he will be playing in his third Geraldton game.
“It’s good to get away from Perth for teambuilding and bonding and there is just a different atmosphere up there,” he said.
“The crowd is usually pretty enthusiastic because it’s a strong East Fremantle zone and it just adds something different to the year.”
New East Fremantle captain Kasey Green said he is relishing being back at East Fremantle after his AFL career and enjoys the added responsibility of leading the club.
Green said all the players look forward to the Geraldton game because it is usually a great crowd and many guys get to play in front of friends and family that they normally only get to visit a few times a year.
“In Geraldton in particular everyone there loves their footy and loves their sport,” he said.
“It’s a very strong football town and that might explain why so many good WAFL and AFL players have been produced there.”
East Fremantle district manager Troy Kirkham said the development staff would be going to all the schools in Geraldton and Mullewa to do clinics or classroom visits as well as conducting training sessions with local clubs.
The players will fly up on Friday when they will hold a free skills clinic with the local Geraldton kids under lights before taking on the Tigers on Saturday.
East Fremantle has a positive record against Claremont in Geraldton with a two nil lead head to head.
