Last Friday, August 22nd, the East Fremantle Football Club held its annual year 8/9 School Girls Football Carnival at All Saints College.

Teams competed from All Saints College (2), Winthrop Baptist College (2), Mandurah Catholic College, Rehoboth Christian College and Morley SHS in a day which was competitive, but most importantly fun for all the girls involved.

The carnival started at 10.00am with the seven teams competing in a round robin format. Games consisted of two twelve minute halves with a three minute break for half time.

Troy Kirkham, the EFFC District Manager, said “the carnival was a great opportunity for girls to play competitive football, which they don’t usually have the opportunity to do.”

“Female football is growing rapidly within our industry, and this carnival will provide a great starting point for the girls to follow a pathway into the Western Australian Women’s football League’, Kirkham added.

After a successful 2007 season with East Fremantle, Rhys Palmer is enjoying a dream first season with the Fremantle Dockers.

Palmer made his WAFL debut for East Fremantle in 2007 and played 14 games before producing a stand-out performance in the 2007 under 18’s carnival in which he averaged 32 possessions and was runner-up as the best player in the carnival.

These performances led to the Fremantle Dockers selecting Palmer with their first pick in the 2007 AFL draft.

Taken at pick number seven, Palmer said being selected in the draft was something he will never forget.

“Obviously draft day is something I will never forget. I just wanted to be drafted and didn’t mind where I went but to be drafted by Fremantle and stay with family and friends was a bonus,” said Palmer.

Indigenous children in Mount Magnet are enjoying the benefits of the Auskick program thanks to a grant from the WA football commission and help from East Fremantle Football Club.

The Mount Magnet Auskick Centre was awarded the $1000 grant to enable 20 indigenous children to get involved in the program as they were unable to afford to participate.

The grant for the Mount Magnet program was made through the Grow the Game funding in the Midwest district.

WA Football Commission Regional Development Officer James Baker said the grant meant the children could enjoy all the benefits of the program.
