The East Fremantle 16’s concluded their WAFL 16’s Carnival on the weekend with a solid victory against East Perth at Claremont Oval. The Sharks who have had an outstanding 2008 carnival ran out victors by 12 points. The East Fremantle side, coached by Murray Glaskin, went through the carnival undefeated, but it was the way the boys played together as a team that was the most rewarding aspect of the carnival.
The WA State 16’s squad was also named today with seven players from our team being named in the initial 36 player squad. Congratulations are extended to David Swallow (Rossmoyne JFC), Justin Monaco (Attadale JFC), Scott Hancock (Rossmoyne JFC), Alex Fasolo (Attadale JFC), Jamie Cripps (Northampton), Mitchell Boyle (Railways – Geraldton) and Miles Bradley (Christchurch).
We have also had another 3 players that play in the East Fremantle District, but play for other development squads, selected in the squad. We would also like to congratulate Michael Edwards (East Fremantle Power JFC), Jarrod Ciesla (Melville JFC) and Brandon Matera (Bullcreek Leeming JFC). Michael played for Perth during the carnival, whilst Jarrod and Brandon both played for South Fremantle.
Although it is tremendous that these players received this selection, the encouraging thing from an East Fremantle perspective is the manner in which all the squad came together as a team throughout the carnival. The camaraderie and genuine respect for each other that the boys have was extremely evident and will no doubt benefit the East Fremantle Football Club as these boys progress through the system to play Colts, Reserves and League together in the future.
Mark Winnett, Development Manager at East Fremantle Football Club, said, “the most encouraging aspect is that every single member of the 16’s squad played in a number of unfamiliar positions throughout the carnival in an attempt to rotate the boys, and develop that versatility that modern day footballers really require. Our coaching staff was really mindful that no matter how good a player is, he needs to develop all facets of his game”. Player rotation is something that the East Fremantle District really emphasises and encourages within all youth teams in the district. Troy Kirkham, District Manager East Fremantle, stated, ” if our development squad coaches at a 16’s level can rotate and develop players throughout their games, then there is no excuse for any coach in our district to not rotate and develop their players to give them the versatility that they require to become better footballers, regardless of results”.
Congratulations must also be extended to the coaching staff in Murray Glaskin (Head Coach), Craig Henson (Assistant Coach), John Hancock (Assistant Coach), Mark Murphy (Assistant Coach), and to all the other parents and support staff of the team.
The team has been training together since December and all the players in the squad should be congratulated for their efforts throughout the entire program. The boys will now return to Community Football, with the seven players mentioned above joining the state training squad. The boys will join back up together as a group in November for Colts training for the 2009 season. We wish all the boys all the best for their football in 2008.
