East Fremantle Draftee Excels in the AFL Print E-mail
Sunday, 24 August 2008

By Courtney Jobe

After a successful 2007 season with East Fremantle, Rhys Palmer is enjoying a dream first season with the Fremantle Dockers.

Palmer made his WAFL debut for East Fremantle in 2007 and played 14 games before producing a stand-out performance in the 2007 under 18’s carnival in which he averaged 32 possessions and was runner-up as the best player in the carnival.

These performances led to the Fremantle Dockers selecting Palmer with their first pick in the 2007 AFL draft.

Taken at pick number seven, Palmer said being selected in the draft was something he will never forget.

“Obviously draft day is something I will never forget. I just wanted to be drafted and didn’t mind where I went but to be drafted by Fremantle and stay with family and friends was a bonus,” said Palmer.

Since then, Palmer has played in all but one game and is one of the favourites to win the NAB Rising Star Award for the best young talent in the AFL.

Palmer said his first season in the AFL has been unexpected and like every footballer his goal is for team success.

“My first season has been everything I thought it would be and more and now I just want to be part of a successful team and be there on that one day in September like every footballer wishes,” said Palmer.
