Indigenous children in Mount Magnet are enjoying the benefits of the Auskick program thanks to a grant from the WA football commission and help from East Fremantle Football Club.
The Mount Magnet Auskick Centre was awarded the $1000 grant to enable 20 indigenous children to get involved in the program as they were unable to afford to participate.
The grant for the Mount Magnet program was made through the Grow the Game funding in the Midwest district.
WA Football Commission Regional Development Officer James Baker said the grant meant the children could enjoy all the benefits of the program.
“We decided to donate the $1000 grant and it now means that these children are officially registered in the program and can receive all the extras that come with it,” Mr Baker said.
East Fremantle Football Club chipped in by donating left over Auskick packs to the Mount Magnet Auskick Centre.
Mr Baker said Auskick programs were especially important in regional towns as they provided something for children to focus on.
“The Auskick programs are extremely important in regional areas especially as there is often not much to do and so football is the only shining light,” he said.
Mr Baker said football could help keep children off the streets and engaged in a healthy activity
